Ghana Cedi Fell 7.9% Against Dollar in First Half of 2026
Bank of Ghana data show renewed foreign-exchange pressure after the currency’s strong gains a year earlier.
The Ghana cedi depreciated 7.9% against the US dollar on the interbank market in the first half of 2026, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest monetary-policy reporting. The currency also weakened against the pound and euro. The reversal contrasts sharply with the cedi’s strong appreciation in the comparable period of 2025 and underscores continuing pressure from corporate and offshore demand for foreign currency. The key question for households and businesses is whether tighter monetary policy, gold-sector reforms and improved foreign-exchange liquidity can stabilise the currency without constraining growth.
