These standards apply to every journalist, editor, contributor and country edition publishing under the NewsRena name.
1. Accuracy
We publish what we can verify. Claims of fact are checked before publication against primary sources wherever possible. Where a fact cannot be independently confirmed, we say so in the story. We do not publish rumour as fact, and we do not report the existence of an unverified claim as a way of putting it into circulation.
2. Sourcing and attribution
We name our sources wherever it is safe and possible to do so. Anonymity is granted only where there is a genuine risk to a source and the information is in the public interest; the reason for anonymity is explained to readers. Material from wire services, partners and other publications is attributed. We do not present other newsrooms' work as our own.
3. Fairness and right of reply
Anyone facing significant criticism or allegation in our reporting is given a fair and timely opportunity to respond before publication, and their response is represented properly in the story. Our formal process is set out on the Right of Reply page.
4. Independence and conflicts of interest
Editorial decisions are made by editors. Advertisers, sponsors, partners, investors and owners have no influence over what we cover or how we cover it. Journalists must declare financial interests, outside work, political activity and personal relationships that could reasonably be seen to affect their reporting, and must not report on subjects in which they hold such an interest.
5. Commercial content and labelling
Sponsored content, partner content, affiliate links and advertising are clearly and visibly labelled as such, and are never presented in a way designed to be mistaken for independent journalism.
6. Use of artificial intelligence
AI tools may assist with research, transcription, translation, summarisation, formatting and headline suggestions. They do not replace human reporting or editorial judgement. No article is published without a named human editor taking responsibility for its accuracy. AI-generated imagery is labelled. We do not publish AI-generated quotes, sources or facts.
7. Images and video
Photographs and video are credited to their source. We do not manipulate images in ways that change their meaning; routine cropping and colour correction are permitted. Illustrations, reconstructions and archive material are labelled.
8. Harm, privacy and vulnerable people
We weigh the public interest against the risk of harm, particularly when reporting on children, victims of crime, grief, health and suicide. We follow recognised safe-reporting guidance on suicide and self-harm.
9. Corrections
When we get something wrong we correct it promptly and visibly. See Corrections and Complaints.
10. Accountability
These standards are owned by the Standards Editor and reviewed annually. Failure to follow them is treated as a disciplinary matter.
