The renowned sociologist and women’s rights advocate leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence, public service and the advancement of women.

Professor Kamene Okonjo, mother of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and wife of the late Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, has died at the age of 96.

The respected academic and matriarch of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State reportedly died on Friday. Her death was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, Palace Secretary of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, on behalf of the royal family.

The royal family described Professor Okonjo as a woman of exceptional intellect, humility, compassion and dignity whose life was dedicated to scholarship, service to humanity and the promotion of women’s rights.

According to the statement, she distinguished herself as an internationally recognised sociologist through her academic achievements, intellectual contributions and lifelong advocacy for women’s empowerment.

Despite her professional accomplishments, she was remembered for her gentle disposition, humility and kindness, qualities that earned her the admiration of those who encountered her.

The family also noted that her influence extended beyond Ogwashi-Uku and Nigeria, earning her recognition within international academic and intellectual circles.

Beyond her academic career, Professor Okonjo was celebrated as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who upheld strong family values and served as a pillar of the royal household.

She was married to the late Professor Chukwuka Okonjo, the immediate past Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, for 66 years.

The royal family said her life represented an enduring example of scholarship, womanhood, motherhood and service to society, adding that her legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

“While we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life exceptionally well lived,” the statement said.

The family expressed confidence in the Christian faith, stating its belief that the late professor was resting peacefully with the Lord after a life marked by distinction and service.

It also extended condolences to the reigning Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and her children, including Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dr Njideka Okonjo-Udochi, Prince Onyema Okonjo and Prince Chichi Okonjo, as well as their spouses, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the wider Okonjo Royal Family.

The royal family called on the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom to celebrate the life and contributions of the late professor, describing her as a remarkable scholar, mother and matriarch whose impact on society would not be forgotten.
