Housing Policy Belongs at the Centre of the Urban Agenda
Safe affordable housing shapes access to work education health and opportunity. Treating it as core infrastructure can make cities fairer and more resilient.
Housing is more than a private asset or a roof over one household. Its location quality affordability and security influence access to jobs schools health care transport and community life. That makes housing a central part of urban policy.
UN-Habitat places housing at the centre of progress toward inclusive safe resilient and sustainable settlements. The challenge is urgent where urban growth is outpacing serviced land infrastructure and affordable supply.
Solutions need reliable data clear land rules appropriate finance basic services and transport links. Upgrading informal settlements should protect residents from displacement and involve communities in planning. Success cannot be measured by unit numbers alone. Housing must be safe connected and affordable over time.
