Indonesia Escalates Wildfire Response as Super El Niño Intensifies

Indonesia has intensified aerial firefighting and cloud-seeding operations as a powerful El Niño amplifies heat and dryness across fire-prone regions.

Nearly 95,000 hectares burned in July alone, while hotspot counts climbed sharply in August. Peatland fires are particularly dangerous because they can smoulder underground, release heavy pollution and generate substantial carbon emissions.

Prevention measures introduced after the catastrophic 2015 season may have reduced some damage, but the current conditions remain a major test. Stronger land management, enforcement against burning and continued peat restoration will determine whether the crisis can be contained.
