Renewables Are Expanding Fast but Electricity Grids Must Catch Up
Renewable power is set to meet most new electricity demand through 2030. Grid capacity finance and system flexibility will determine how much of that promise is realised.
Renewable electricity is becoming the main engine of global power growth. The International Energy Agency projects that renewables will meet more than 90 percent of the increase in global electricity demand between 2025 and 2030.
Adding generation is only one part of the transition. Networks need transmission connections modern distribution systems storage and flexible demand. Delays in permitting and grid connections can leave viable projects waiting for years while high financing costs affect emerging economies most severely.
A durable transition requires coordinated planning across generation networks storage skills and consumer protection. Communities also need a fair role in decisions about land benefits and environmental impacts. Progress should be judged by reliable affordable electricity delivered when and where it is needed.
