Nature reserves have recorded unusual and rare species during periods of extreme heat, according to monitoring highlighted by the BBC.

A wildlife trust said the findings reflected both exceptional weather conditions and increased observation across protected sites. Heat can temporarily alter the movement, visibility and distribution of species, while stronger monitoring increases the chance that previously overlooked wildlife will be documented.

The discoveries offer valuable evidence, but they should not be read as proof that heatwaves benefit ecosystems overall. Long periods of extreme temperature can place substantial stress on habitats, water systems and vulnerable species.
