AI-Enabled Cyberattacks Become a Leading Risk to Global Finance
The Financial Stability Board warns that artificial intelligence could transform the speed, scale and cost of cyberattacks against critical financial systems.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the economics of cybercrime, creating new operational risks for banks, markets and the technology providers on which they depend.
Financial Stability Board chair Andrew Bailey warned G20 finance ministers that advanced systems could accelerate the discovery and exploitation of vulnerabilities. Many jurisdictions still lack mature frameworks for governing powerful AI models, while the financial sector remains concentrated around a small group of technology suppliers.
The immediate policy challenge is to match advances in capability with stronger testing, recovery planning and international coordination. A failure at one widely used provider could quickly become a system-wide confidence problem.
