Young people make up a major share of the world’s population, yet their participation in formal decision-making often remains limited. United Nations social-development work in 2026 has placed renewed emphasis on youth voice, mental health, population trends and inclusive institutions.

The policy challenge goes beyond inviting young people to occasional consultations. Meaningful participation requires accessible information, representative youth bodies, transparent feedback and evidence that contributions can influence real decisions.

Governments, schools, employers and civic organizations all have a role in closing the gap between symbolic inclusion and shared authority. Policies designed with young people are more likely to reflect the pressures they face in education, work, housing and digital life.
