Costa Rica Expands School-Based Learning for Sustainable Development

Costa Rica’s education ministry and UNESCO have begun a new phase of a programme that helps schools investigate and respond to sustainability challenges in their communities.

The 2026 cycle combines follow-up support for participating schools with the addition of new institutions. Field visits have included teacher training and technical guidance on three areas: educator competencies, whole-school planning and learning assessment.

The approach is designed to make sustainable development practical rather than abstract. Participating schools will present their projects and share results across UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network, creating a route for successful ideas to travel beyond a single classroom.
