Ghana Says Styrofoam Ban Is First Step in Wider Plastics Crackdown

Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority says the planned ban on expanded-polystyrene food containers is the first phase of a broader effort to reduce non-biodegradable single-use plastics. The authority says full enforcement will begin on January 1, 2027, after a transition period for traders, importers and food vendors. Officials are promoting paper, aluminium, recyclable plastics and packaging made from agricultural by-products as alternatives. The policy will test Ghana’s ability to combine environmental regulation with affordable packaging options for small businesses and consumers.
