US Treasury Restricts Journalist Access to G20 Finance Meeting

The US Treasury Department has denied credentials to journalists from several major news organizations seeking to cover a Group of 20 finance ministers meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.

The New York Times and Bloomberg News criticized the exclusions, arguing that access is especially important when ministers are discussing sanctions, inflation, bond markets and wider risks to the global economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the decisions were not based on viewpoint, according to the Associated Press.

The dispute places transparency at the centre of a gathering designed to coordinate policy among the world’s largest economies. For newsrooms, the issue extends beyond individual credentials: independent access allows reporters to compare official statements with questions from markets, governments and the public.
