German State Election Could Put the Far Right in a Governor’s Office

Voters in Saxony-Anhalt are approaching an election that could produce modern Germany’s first far-right state governor, according to the Associated Press.

The Alternative for Germany is leading opinion polls in the eastern state, where economic frustration and dissatisfaction with the federal government have strengthened its position. An outright parliamentary majority would allow the party to govern without relying on partners that have so far refused formal cooperation.

The result will be watched far beyond the state. It could test Germany’s post-war political safeguards, influence other regional contests and intensify debate about immigration, economic stagnation, support for Ukraine and the boundaries of democratic coalition-building.
