Icelandic voters have narrowly rejected a proposal to restart negotiations to join the European Union, according to results reported by the Associated Press.

The measure was defeated by 52.8 percent to 47.2 percent in a referendum with turnout above 82 percent. Supporters argued that membership could strengthen economic stability and cooperation, while opponents—particularly in the fishing sector—warned that accession could reduce national control over key resources.

Iceland already participates in the European single market and the Schengen area. The result leaves those arrangements intact while making a renewed membership bid unlikely in the near term.
