Wurukum school wins Benue basic education games staged in Vandeikya

LGEA Primary School, Wurukum, in Makurdi emerged overall champion of the Benue State finals of the Basic Education School Sports Games, held at LGEA Primary School, Mbakunde, in Vandeikya.

The competition was organised by the State Universal Basic Education Board with the Universal Basic Education Commission, and brought together the best-performing basic schools in the state. Events covered the 100 metres, relay races, long jump and football for boys and girls, alongside the traditional board game Ayo.

The board's executive chairman, Grace Adagba, said in her welcome address that platforms of this kind are needed to identify talent early. The Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Margaret Adamu, and the chairman of Vandeikya Local Government Council, Dennis Guda, also spoke at the finals. The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Aisha Garba, was represented by the commission's director of planning, research and statistics, Zipporah Panguru, and the former Super Eagles striker and coach Samson Siasia urged the young athletes to stay disciplined. Deputy Governor Sam Ode represented Governor Hyacinth Alia at the closing presentation of trophies and prizes.
