Nigeria renews call for Africa’s permanent voice on UN Security Council
Shettima raised representation and institutional reform during UN meetings in New York.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has renewed Nigeria’s call for permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council. Channels Television reported the remarks on 27 September, citing a statement from his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha.
Shettima spoke during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on the sidelines of the 81st General Assembly in New York. He argued that Africa’s exclusion weakened the fairness and credibility of international decision-making.
The remarks restate Nigeria’s diplomatic position. They do not announce an agreed change to the Council’s membership. Shettima also said Nigeria would support efforts to rebuild international trust and address the human consequences of conflict.
