Snakebite Survivor Returns to Thank Ortom for Help

A young woman from Ugondo in Makurdi, Benue State, has returned to thank former Governor Samuel Ortom after his intervention helped her access treatment following a severe snakebite.

Rachael Tsehemba Tordue reportedly suffered heavy bleeding after the incident and was unable to get the treatment she needed when her family struggled to raise the required medical expenses.

With her condition deteriorating, her parents reportedly sought help at Ortom’s residence at the Judges’ Quarters in Makurdi.

The appeal reached Ortom through his former Chief Press Secretary, Dr Terver Akase, who brought the situation to the former governor’s attention.

Ortom then directed that the case be followed up, leading to Rachael receiving anti-snake venom and other medical care.

She eventually recovered and has now returned with her family to express their appreciation to the former governor.

Receiving the family, Ortom said the experience reinforced the importance of helping people in moments of need, irrespective of political affiliation or expectation of personal benefit.

«“I am happy that you are alive and have recovered. Life is precious, and whenever we have the opportunity to help someone in distress, we should do so.”»

Ortom said his intervention was not motivated by politics or any expectation of reward.

«“I did not do this because of politics or because I expected anything in return. She needed help, and we were in a position to assist. I thank God for using us to contribute to saving her life.”»

He urged Rachael and her family to continue following medical advice and expressed hope that she would make a full return to normal life.

The former governor also commended Akase and Zege Paul for ensuring that the case was followed through to its conclusion.

«“A leader must have people around him who genuinely want him or her to succeed. May God bless them too,” Ortom said.»

Rachael and her family expressed gratitude for the intervention, saying the assistance came at a critical moment when they were struggling to secure the treatment she needed.

The visit ended with Rachael, now recovered, meeting the former governor whose intervention had helped her obtain medical attention during the ordeal.
