NDC Chairman Found Dead in Makurdi
The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Fiidi Council Ward, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Igbu Terhemen, has died after he was reportedly attacked and found unconscious in a bush near his residence.
Terhemen was reportedly discovered around 2am on Wednesday, September 30, in a bush close to the NNPC Depot, along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road, on the outskirts of Makurdi.
A friend of the deceased, who spoke anonymously, said Terhemen had left his residence on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area but failed to return home.
According to the source, relatives and friends became concerned after several hours without hearing from him and began searching for him.
He said Terhemen was eventually found unconscious in a bush near his residence and died before he could receive medical attention.
The source further claimed that Terhemen's mobile phone was still with him when he was taken to the morgue, while an injury resembling a needle puncture was allegedly noticed on his body.
The source suggested that the circumstances surrounding the injury could form part of the investigation into his death, but there has been no official confirmation that Terhemen was injected with any substance.
The NDC, in a statement signed by its Benue State Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, condemned what it described as the killing of the party's ward chairman.
According to the statement, Terhemen was allegedly attacked by suspected hoodlums, tied with ropes and injected with substances suspected by the party to be poisonous before being abandoned near his residence.
The party said he was found in an almost unconscious condition and was unable to speak or communicate before his death.
Reacting to the incident, the NDC State Chairman, Ohini Ojegbe, described the incident as a “broad-daylight evil” and called on security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding Terhemen's death.
Ojegbe urged the relevant authorities to identify and arrest those responsible if the death is established to have resulted from a criminal attack.
The party described Terhemen as a committed member who contributed to the growth of the NDC in Benue State, saying his death would be deeply felt by the party.
However, when contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, reportedly said the command had not received a report on the incident.
The circumstances surrounding Terhemen's death therefore remain subject to investigation, and the allegations made by witnesses and the political party have not been independently confirmed by the police.
NewsRena will update this report as further details emerge from the police or other relevant authorities.
